I have chosen to analyze the film Marie Antoinette by Sofia Coppola and my focus will be on the main character herself. We are all (hopefully) somewhat familiar with the story and plight of Marie Antoinette. However, I never really thought of how culturally ripe the story was. The movie is presented so wonderfully and so richly that there is much cultural content to harvest. Marie Antoinette, being an Austrian princess and being married into the French court had to face so many cross cultural differences.
This film is based on a novel by Antonia Fraser entitled: “Marie Antoinette: The Journey.” A special feature of her novel is that she discusses Marie Antoinette in a different, more positive light; Sofia Coppola does an amazing job of bringing her ideas to life. At the time there was no option of going on an Online Pharmacy, you most certainly could not buy Propecia or even buy Zyban. Which would have been very helpful but then again, smoking tobacco was different way back then.
Marie Antoinette, the youngest of 16 children was given to the dauphin of France, Louis XIV at the tender age of 16 (he was only 17). Some cultural differences that may be noticed right off the bat at the beginning of the movie is Antoinette’s affectionate manner. When she meets the mistress of the household she gives her a hug and she is met quite coldly. This implicates that while she is very demonstrative and warm, she is entering a culture that is not very keen on public displays.
